Gon was raised up by his aunt Mito since at a very young age. At the beginning of the story, Gon met a guy called Kaito who is a Hunter, and from Kaito, Gon found out that his father who is a legendary hunter is still alive in the world. Gon decided to become a hunter so that he can find his father, Jin Freecss, one day. Gon's nen ability is a 'Strengthen type'. People belonging to this category excel in attack and defense and also have the ability to heal themselves quickly. Besides that, Gon also uses a fishing rod as his weapon, although it doesn't deal much damage to his enemies, but it always prove to be useful at times. One of the example was the time when he hooked Hisoka's number card at the fourth round test.     

Killua was born in a family of renowned assassins, the Zaoldyeck family. Even though as a young child, Killua has already mastered many killing techniques and is one of the best assassins the family has produced. Killua does not use any weapons in combat, instead he uses his hands to change into razor sharp claws that can rip out beating hearts at will or behead enemies in a split second. Out of the six nen types, Killua belongs to the 'Manipulative type', which can transform the nen into any substance at their will.      

Kurapica is a member of the Kurutu tribe, when the members of the tribe's emotions get extreme, the colors of their eyes turn flaming red. Because of this, the eyes of the tribe become in high demand for treasure collectors. In the past, the Phantom Brigade came to Kurapica's hometown and massacred all the members of the tribe, they killed every single members of the tribe and gorging all their eyes out, and leaving him as the only sole survivor that is left. Kurapica vows to retrieve back all the stolen eyes of his people, by tracking the Brigade down and seek revenge, even to the extent of sacrificing his life. Kurapica's nen ability is one that can fashion objects that act according to his imagination. The weapon that he creates is a unique form - extending from his fingers of his right hand are five chains, which were specially created to deal vengeance upon the Phantom Brigade.      

Much is unknown about Leorio. He seems to be a guy who just wants to be a Hunter for money, but beneath that appearance, he has his dream. Leorio wants to be a doctor. His best friend died from a disease that had been curable but because the fee for the operation was extremely expensive, and in the end, his friend had not been able to afford it. Thus he inspires to be a doctor - one that not only cures the ill of their disease, but also to provide free medical treatments for the poor. In order to make his dream come true, he needs money for his medical school fees and also pay for the medicine and other miscellaneous expenditures when treating the poor and that is why he wants to be a hunter, a profession that has one of the best salaries.
